Frank W. Chapman

U.S. Veteran

Frank “Chappie” Chapman Sr. 94 of Huntington departed this earth peacefully on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 in the Huntington Health & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. Chappie was born November 21, 1916 in Columbus Ohio to Frank P. and Iola Chapman. He attended Douglas High School and later married Irene L. Woodson in 1945. They had two children Frankie & Denise. Chappie was a loving husband, a good father, and a hard working provider. He retired from Appalachian Power Company as head custodian and also worked part-time for JC Penney. Chappie was an avid bowler; however, golf was his favorite past-time. He was the first black participant in the AEP soft ball league. Well into his 80’s he could be seen taking early morning walks throughout his neighborhood. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Frank was an active and long time member of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Frank leaves to cherish his memory his son, Frank W. Chapman Jr. of Chittenango NY; daughter Denise Cosby-Dotson (Thomas) of Charleston, WV; two grandchildren, Courtney Cosby-Smith (Ryan) and Marcus J. Cosby (Lindsey), seven great-grand children, his guardian angels; Linda Jefferson and Robert Felder; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Irene Chapman, sisters; Lucille Givens, Iona Phillips, Arlene Clemmons; brothers; Marvin, Kermit, Norman and Carl Chapman. He crossed over into eternity with his youngest brother Wendell on Wednesday morning September 28th.Visitation will be Tuesday evening, October 4th from 5 to 8 p.m. A celebration of his long and blessed life will be held 2 p.m. October 5th at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Terry officiating.
