Melvin LeRoy Brisco

Melvin LeRoy “Uncle Mel” Brisco was born on July 6, 1949. He was the second child of Thomas Lee Brisco, Sr., and Augustine Toms Brisco in Huntington, West Virginia. He passed away from Earth to his heavenly home in heaven on January 9, 2025. Melvin was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilyn Hairston; father, Thomas Lee Brisco, Sr.; mother, Flora Augustine Smith; Lewis Smith (stepfather); brother, Gerald Steven Brisco; and Sister, Jeri Brisco-Baylor. Melvin accepted His Lord and Jesus Christ at an early age. His faith in God never wavered. “Uncle Mel,” as he was affectionately known by all who knew and loved him, attended Huntington High School in Huntington, West Virginia. Melvin was loved and respected by his peers and teachers, and he acquired the nickname “ Uncle Mel” because of his easy-going and mild-mannered nature. He was the type of person everyone wanted to be around. Never meeting a stranger, he would do anything that he could for anyone. One special quality of “Uncle Mel” is that he was gifted at storytelling, along with having a passion for American and World History. In high school, “Uncle Mel” was an all-state football player. The local newspaper, Herald-Dispatch, featured him as one of Huntington High School’s most valuable players at the time. His speed and agility on the football field were second to none, and his football ability earned him many awards and accolades. Upon graduating from high school, Melvin was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country valiantly with pride and dignity. “Uncle Mel” met his sweetheart, Marilyn Hairston, in Huntington, West Virginia. They fell in love and married in May 2009. They raised their beautiful children together and lived happily together until she went home to be with the Lord on February 23, 2019. They loved their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all of their hearts. Melvin lived a simplistic but full life surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, which made him the best father and Pawpaw in the world. He enjoyed music, joking around with his friends, and talking on the phone with his brother, Thomas Brisco, and sister, Joyce Smith. He never met a stranger and loved everyone with a pure heart, as Jesus Christ would love. His presence will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Melvin leaves to cherish his memories his brother Thomas Brisco (Joyce), Austin, Texas; Sister Joyce Smith, Lansing, Michigan, his children: his beloved son Andre Hairston; daughters Sharmein Sloan, Christine Ulonda France, and Audrana Hairston; grandchildren Crystal, Natalya, Kirk, William Jr., Taylor, Demetrise, Marilyn, and Zavier; and great-grandkids Nakaila, Jaleeia, Isaiah, Sheldon Jr., Ben, Patrick Jr., Josiah, and Kaia and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A Funeral Service will be conducted 12:00 P.M, Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home, Huntington,WV.
